Talking about ADPKD

Talking to others about your diagnosis is a very personal decision.

Family

When planning a conversation with your family about your condition, consider the following tips:

  • Choose a time when you can discuss the topic thoroughly, in a place where you feel comfortable
  • Educate yourself to be prepared to answer questions and provide resources
    • When talking to your children, adjust information for your child’s level of understanding
  • Be honest and transparent, including the genetic implications of ADPKD
  • Encourage questions and be prepared to listen
  • Share your own feelings about your diagnosis, and share any plans you have for managing complications and your health
  • Provide reassurance that you are taking steps to help manage your condition
  • Respect individual choices and offer emotional support

Friends

Friends can help offer support and listen to your experiences with ADPKD. Since they may not understand your condition, you may have to be prepared to answer their questions about ADPKD.

Employer

Before telling your employer about your diagnosis, consider how your condition may impact your job through special accommodations or flexibility to take time off for appointments and procedures.
